How hosting works: the Host Console, the HUD and player phones

Every Gig Game session uses three screens: your Host Console, the big-screen HUD, and the phones in your players' hands.

Take me there: Browse Games

Gig Game turns any laptop and TV into a live game show. Every event runs on three pieces working together in real time. This is the same explanation as the How This Works window at the top of Browse Games.

Host Console

Your control room. Log in from a laptop browser to pick a game, run the score, and pace the event. Want to work the room instead of standing behind the laptop? Run a secondary Host Console from a tablet and walk around while you host.

Heads Up Display (HUD)

The big screen your crowd watches. You open it from your Host Console on your laptop and share it to the TV, over a wireless video projection (Chromecast, AirPlay) or a plain HDMI cable. This is what makes the room feel like a game show.

Player Controllers

The players' own mobile phones or tablets. They scan a QR code on the HUD and their device becomes their buzzer, keyboard, or drawing pad. No app required. The QR code can also be printed out and handed to players or posted around the venue.

#Events

Games run under Events. Think of an Event as a session in a place or time (Jim's Bar on a Monday night, or a 3-day trade show floor): it's all the same idea. Each Event tracks its own unique players, leads, leaderboards, and social media uploads.

When an event starts, Gig Game gives it a five-character access code and a matching QR code. Players who scan the QR code go straight to the join page. Players who type the code at giggame.app/play land on the same page.

#How players join

Players never download anything. They point their phone camera at the QR code shown on the HUD and they're in the game within seconds. The same setup works for 2 players or 10,000.

#What a typical session looks like

  1. You pick a game in the Host Hub and start an event.
  2. The Host Console opens on your laptop. You open the HUD and share it to the big screen.
  3. Players scan the QR code on the big screen and join.
  4. You run the game from the Host Console while the room plays on their phones.
  5. When you are done, you end the event. Your player list and scores are kept for your records.
